Come and learn simple sculpture and handbuilding techniques with paper clay. Make and decorate your own whimsical Garden Totem with garden resting places for insects and small creatures in mind…
Avis has become interested in making her own garden totems, which have been widely exhibited recently.
…The “Totem” itself as homage to ancestral descent…whether real or myth… lends itself perfectly to various subject matter. It’s composition also gives the opportunity to add or remove pieces at different stages……often changing from my original concept and showing new scenes. It can be assembled in many ways.
Avis is a professional ceramicist from the UK with over twenty years experience who relocated to Melbourne from the UK in 2007. Her practice includes Sculpture and Jewellery.
Qualifications include
- BA.Hons Degree in 3 Dimensional Design Specializing in Silversmithing.Secondary subjects: Ceramics, Textiles and Painting;
- Awarded the Goldsmiths Hall Scholarship placement at the Dutch Chain Works, Voorschoten, Holland.
- Trained in Ceramics at John Cass College, London.
- Avis has exhibited widely, both in the UK and more recently, in melbourne
She has recently become interested in running sculpture workshops.Following on directly from her own Resting Place Sculptures, she designed a project for which she was awarded two grants. One from the City of Melbourne to work at Art Play with over 120 children from three different schools and also an Artist in Schools grant from the Victorian Government to work at St Mary’s College for hearing impaired students.
Since being in Melbourne has been the recipient of two grants to run sculpture workshops with children. ”This is a new area of my practice which I am really enjoying”
